Tutors
If
you are looking to become a tutor or have been working as a tutor
for some time and would like to expand on your skills, here are
many tips that may be helpful. Tutoring is a great profession
either to supplement a full time job or as a side job that is
flexible and fulfilling. For many tutors and tutors to be, becoming
the best that they can be is extremely important.
One of the most important tips is to understand your student
and how subject matter will be used. Your subject should be your
first concern. After all, you are hired to enhance your student’s
knowledge, help him or her overcome obstacles and give your student
a sense of achievement and confidence. Knowing the depth of the
child’s knowledge is extremely important. You might need to have
a couple of sessions to determine exactly what the student already
knows and which parts they might have difficulties with. Knowing
your student is truly the cornerstone of tutoring. If you have
a good understanding of your student, you are able to pinpoint
a curriculum that can easily help him or her exceed or comprehend
the subject matter quickly.

Knowing your subject matter is also extremely important and usually
one of the top priorities for the parents. While many teachers
are extremely proficient in teaching a subject in school, many
parents want the tutor to go above and beyond what is normally
taught in a public school or general classroom. You may find it
interesting as well to study up on the current trends in a subject
and familiarize yourself with specific parts of a curriculum.
For instance, if you are fast tracking a child for a history class,
you may find yourself researching many different areas of a certain
topic in order to give the student the most current information
available as well as insightful and thoughtful analysis.
Another tip that can be helpful for tutors is learning skills
for developing lesson plans. Many tutors are not teachers or professors;
they may be highly knowledgeable and have a great wealth of study,
but may not have taught a certain age group or have been a teacher
in the past at all. This is not a disadvantage. Tutors can bring
many different things to a student and if you have experience
in a certain field, it may be more interesting and beneficial
for a student than just a teacher who has taught a specific subject
in the past. However, it is important for any tutor to understand
the challenges in teaching and learn how to organize a lesson
proficiently. You want to be organized, focus and relevant to
the student. Not only must you keep the student’s focus on learning,
you must help them overcome the obstacles or keep their energy
level high during the session in order to maximize their learning.
If you are either a tutor or would like to start tutoring in
the near future, take a look at the above suggestions and advice
on how to maximize your tutoring sessions
